Designing a Website for a Fine Home Builder

For a builder in Chapel Hill and Durham.

Here is the thinking behind a website I designed for my partner — Ed Ralston — who has built many fine homes in the area. Primarily in Durham, and mainly in north Durham where one finds large property plots with plenty of room for many square feet. But also in Chapel Hill, where many are building additions.

First I created a logo with a catchy phrase “Cutting Edge Carpentry”. It is a simple design with different colors across the text. To give the site a structure that was simple but bold, I used bold orange lines to divide up the space.

Ed Ralston had a cabinet shop in the early 70s. Then went to work for a major builder in Durham as foreman for highly skilled construction on high-end houses. Ed has an immediate affinity for the design of space.
Designing a site that included a gallery with many samples of the finely crafted work was a pleasure.

I hand-coded the site, using javascript for the galleries. Because the site was so straight forward I built it quickly in about three days! Check out his site to see examples of his work and testimonials. His site is now just one of my sample sites.

PS. I also created another site for a builder that Ed now works with. That builder is named Trip Renn and his site is: http://www.actualsizebuilders.com
